Screen
is good software. It lets you run multiple virtual VT100 sessions
inside a single telnet or ssh.
Even better, it lets you detach your session and resume it later, so
you can log off and come back.
VNC is like screen for GUIs.
Screen's at least 14 years old and still useful.
